March is Youth Art Month

It's Music in Our Schools Month too. So, this week, Education World devotes its issue to stories about art and music education! (Stay tuned -- you'll see additional arts related stories throughout the month!)

Among this week's special stories you'll find ideas for fun -- and cheap! -- art projects and resources for "making a case for music education"!

  • Art on a Shoestring: Creating Groundbreaking Works Without Breaking the Bank! As school budgets shrink, especially in the area of arts education, are you finding it difficult to fund even the simplest art projects for your classroom? Art doesn't have to cost big bucks! Some of the neatest works of art are made with recycled or inexpensive materials. You don't have to be a scrooge to appreciate a good bargain --- these activities straight from the Internet are fun *and* cheap!

  • Making the Case for Music Education What will it be --- music or computers? In some communities, it all comes down to that question. New research, special programs, and dedicated teachers and community members are helping to make a solid case for putting music "Bach" into our schools!

  • WANTED: Art Teachers Willing to Share! Art teacher Pete Sotelo is looking to add to his "collection" of lesson plans by collaborating with other art teachers on-line. Here, he offers three of his best activities. Do you have an idea to share with him? Included: Take a look at Web pages created by a handful of other art teachers!

  • Two New Books Make Beautiful Music! Weave music into any classroom curriculum with two new books! PLAY ME A STORY presents nine tales from around the world, each with a musical instrument as its central focus. And 16 SONGS KIDS LOVE TO SING offers songs ideal for the classroom --- songs for primary and upper elementary students, songs for team building and celebrating, and songs just for fun!
