Lesson Plan

Although this activity is often used as an icebreaker activity, the questionnaire can be a fun activity that helps students get better acquainted at any point during the school year. Open your students' eyes to the diversity and similarities among them with the game Fabulous Friends.

Distribute a page of blocks with traits, preferences, and other characteristics that students in your class may share. Give the students several minutes to find a peer with each of the characteristics and obtain a signature in every block, if possible.

An example questionnaire:

has met Mickey Mouse
has an unusual pet
loves pancakes
plays an instrument
wears a baseball cap
has ridden a horse
has a younger brother
was born in December
has a dog
as a pet
has been to another country
loves to roller blade
takes dance lessons
loves to read books
has an older sister
has a special collection
has a summer birthday
has a cat
as a pet
goes camping
with family
belongs to a sports team
rides a bike
is an only child
speaks another language
has a signed baseball / football
listens to country music
has a pony tail

When time is up, find out who has gathered the greatest number of names and discuss each trait. Invite students to raise their hands if they possess a trait as you talk about it. What special collections and pets are owned by members of your class?

This activity would be ideal in foreign language classes for upper grades. Create a form in the language the students are studying, and have them use their shared knowledge and dictionaries to find friends who share the traits.

Assessment

The student who has the greatest number of verified signatures may receive a small incentive.
