10 Books to Celebrate Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and teachers will be finding ways to bring the national holiday in their classrooms through crafts, videos, activities, lessons, and books. 

Books are a great way to teach students about different topics, and a great resource to wind down after a long day. Education World has curated a list of Thanksgiving books for teachers to bring to their elementary school classrooms.  

  1. Thanksgiving Is For Giving Thanks by Margaret Sutherland: Age Range: 3-6 years

In this book, Amazon says that, "cheerful, colorful illustrations accompany the simple text in this celebration of family, friends, and the holiday that brings them all together."

  1. The Night Before Thanksgiving by Natasha Wing: Age Range: 4-8 years

In this book, Amazon says students can, "Follow along as the feast is prepared, cousins are greeted, and everyone gathers around the table, all with an extra helping of holiday fun."

  1. The First Thanksgiving by Linda Hayward: Age Range: 5-8 years

"The First Thanksgiving", which falls into Step 3 of Step-Into-Reading, Amazon says, is "illustrated in full color," and "the story of the Pilgrims is vividly retold in simple language for beginning readers."

  1. Thanksgiving Is... by Gail Gibbons: Age Range: 5+ years

In this festive book, Amazon says, " Gibbons tells the story of the Pilgrims, their Native American friends, and the first Thanksgiving with minimal text and colorful illustrations that supply further details."

  1. The Thanksgiving Story by Alice Dalgliesh: Age Range: 5-8 years

In this book, Amazon says, "Miss Dalgliesh has told the Pilgrim story simply from the point of view of the Hopkins family whose little Oceanus was born on the Mayflower; and Miss Sewell has made wonderful full-color pictures."

  1. 10 Fat Turkeys by Tony Johnston: Age Range: 3-5 years

In "10 Fat Turkeys", Amazon says children will "gobble up this hilarious story about ten goofy turkeys and their silly antics: swinging from a vine, strutting on a boar, doing a noodle dance, and more."

  1. T Is For Turkey by Tanya Lee Stone: Age Range: 3-5 years

In this book, Amazon says, little one's can join in "as the elementary school puts on a play that tells the true story of the first Thanksgiving. Rhyming couplets that flow through the alphabet help kids celebrate everything from Harvest to Pilgrims to Turkey."

  1. The Berenstain Bears Thanksgiving Blessings by Mike Berenstain: Age Range: 4-8 years

Students can follow the famous bear family "as Brother and Sister learn about all the things they, and you, can be thankful for … including faith, family, and the huge feast waiting for them at the end of their journey to Gramp’s and Gran’s," says Amazon.

  1. What Is Thanksgiving? by Michelle Medlock Adams: Age Range: 2+ years

In this book, Amazon says, students can learn Thanksgiving, "through the whimsical art and rhyming verse that's fun to read."

  1. Thanks for Thanksgiving by Julie Markes: Age Range: 4-8 years

In "Thanks for Thanksgiving", Amazon says, "from the turkey on the table to warm, cozy cuddles, life is full of small things and bigger pleasures. But what is most important is being able to share them with family!"
