Teacher Donna Kelley loves auctions, so why not use an auction to encourage students to develop desirable work habits and have fun, too? During the last quarter of the school year, Kelley introduced Kelley Kash, a "token economy" system of classroom management. She explained that there would be a big auction during the last week of school and that students would have the opportunity to "buy" neat stuff with the Kelley Kash they would earn in the weeks leading up to the auction. Students earned Kelley Kash for returning assignments on time, performing deeds of kindness, and more. Every Friday, students recorded their earnings in their student notebooks and updated the total value of their Kelley Kash. When auction day came around, Kelley taught students how to participate in auction bidding. Kids went home with lots of cool stuff that day, and Kelley had less to organize and pack up at the end of the school year.
