Invite students to apply for classroom jobs: Post a list of job descriptions and requirements, including a small salary ("reward") for each position, depending on its degree of difficulty. Classroom jobs might include chalkboard eraser, computer duster, fish feeder, plant caretaker, learning center inspector, line leader, bookcase arranger, pencil sharpener, paper passer, and so on.
Each week, during writing time, encourage students to write a letter applying for the job they want. The letter should describe their qualifications and explain why they think they should be hired for that job. Then select the best candidate for each job -- making sure each student has an opportunity to hold each position at some point during the year.
