Missouri middle-school teacher Ellen McClurg set up a program in her classroom called S.T.A.R.S. or Students That Are Really Serious. Every time she catches a student doing something positive, that student gets a star for his or her chart. Students can earn stars for being on task, turning in homework on time, participating in class, helping out, and so on.
When a student has earned 50 stars, he or she may choose from a list of rewards: a homework pass, sitting in the beanbag chair during class, listening to music as they work, a class period in the library for independent study, or a snack-food item.
"This program changed my class a lot," McClurg says. "I have fewer problems with poor behavior -- I'd say a reduction of 80 to 90 percent over last year. They even remind one another to have correct behavior now."
