Give each child in the class a checkbook with a specific amount of money deposited in it, say $200. If a student doesn't complete a homework assignment, he or she might have to write a check for $50. If a student breaks a classroom rule, perhaps he or she will have to write a check for $25. Plan a list of class deductions related to behaviors you would like to encourage. At the end of a month, students might be allowed to use money they have left in their checkbooks to purchase privileges. For example, they might be able to purchase a No-Homework-Tonight Pass for $200, 15 minutes of free-time computer time for $100, 5 extra points on a quiz for $50, or a school pencil for $25. Invite students to suggest privileges and costs. A new deposit of $200 might be made to their checkbooks each month.
