Over the past six years, I've run a program that works like a dream with my 11- and 12-year-old students. Each child carries a card on which he or she records stamps awarded for excellent work, great ideas, nice contributions to discussions, good manners, friendliness, bringing things from home in a timely way in short, behaviors that I want to reinforce. When a student earns 5 stamps, he or she can trade in the card for a treat. The "treats" are agreed upon at the beginning of the term and might include an item from our treat bag, permission to change seats, game time with a friend, or extra art or computer time. If a student breaks a class rule, an X is recorded on the card. If a student gets two Xs, I contact the parents. Three Xs result in an after-school detention. The good news is that students can trade in 3 stamps and eliminate one X.
