Parent Pep Talk: 10 Good Arguments

(Continued from EdWorld At Home)

Thinking about Good Arguments
It’s a little easier to make a list of 10 logical lies or fallacies than it is to write in a simple way about good arguments. Over history, the typical flaws that appear in arguments have become pretty clear and pretty clearly wrong. However, since humans are creative, we continually invent new ways to argue points, even new ways of discovering the truth.

So the 10 Good Arguments are really things you need to know about argument and logic, and some common styles or types of powerful arguments.

If you haven’t seen the 10 Logical Lies yet, you may wish to start your kid or kids on that, and challenge them with the 10 Good Arguments later. On the other hand, as a sort of mini handbook on logical argument, these two lists together should give you 20 of the most important concepts, and a middle schooler or high schooler who masters these 20 concepts will be well on his or her way toward debate-club dominance!
