Target Audience: The Peaceful Playgrounds Online Playground Supervisor Training is designed to introduce administrators, teachers, substitute teachers, physical educators, parents, after school personnel, and playground supervisors to the responsibilities and techniques associated with keeping children safe on a playground.

 

Course Description:

The course is divided into 5 areas:

Injuries: Definition of injury, definition of accident, where children are injured, type of activities that cause serious injury, playground laws and regulations, surfacing and injuries, Consumer Product Safety Guidelines, injury prevention tips, and when to intervene.

Supervision: Supervision zones, before recess responsibilities, during recess responsibilities, after recess responsibilities, and supervision tips.

Dealing with behavior problems: Procedures to follow, respectful intervention and redirection, resources and unsafe behaviors.

Legal Liability: Definition of Standard of Care, tips for reducing liability, General Standard of Care, inappropriate games and activities, and how to limit your liability.

Hazards: Surfacing, public use, maintenance and inspections.

 

Course Goals:

1. To train you to become a better playground supervisor so that you better understand your role and responsibility in keeping children safe on the playground.

2. Understand your responsibilities before, during, after recess and supervision zones and how they contribute to student safety.

3. Understand how to deal with behavior problems on the playground.

4. Understand you role and legal responsibilities in keeping children safe on the playground.

5. Understand hazards and a supervisor’s responsibility in maintaining a safe playground.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Melinda Bossenmeyer, Ed.D. holds a doctorate in Educational Leadership from U.C.L.A. She has a MS and BS in Kinesiology from California State University Fullerton. She holds a K-12 teaching credential in Kinesiology and Health. She holds a K-16 Administrator Clear Credential from UCLA. Dr. Bossenmeyer taught for 27 years at public, private schools, and universities. She was a site principal and County Office Administrator as Director of Professional Development. She is an expert witness in cases involving supervision and injuries on playgrounds in school settings.

FAQs

When does the course start and finish? Most courses available start as soon as you enroll and can be taken at your pace. We suggest trying to have it done within 4-6 weeks.

Graduate level courses operate like a normal college level course and have a start and end date. Refer to the course you are interested in or contact us for a list of start dates.

 

What type of payment is accepted for this course?  **Courses with available CEUs or Graduate Credits have an additional cost through a University associated with them if you plan to obtain the credits. Professional Development hours through the S&S Online School come with the course enrollment fee.

Credit Card - The easiest way to pay for one of our online courses is to use your credit card. Our online system will send an email receipt after you place your order with your credit card which you should be able to use for reimbursement.

Payment with a Purchase Order (PO) - We are happy to take payment via Purchase Order (PO). Remember, however, we cannot have you start the course until the PO has been paid for by your school or school district. *Please make note that for graduate courses we will need a PO several weeks in advance and payment before the start of the course.

  • After we receive your emailed PO, we will email you the invoice
  • Pay the Invoice
  • We will register the teacher in the course for you and then we will send an email to the teacher telling them of their UN and PW for the ssww.teachable.com website. They can start the course at anytime after that.
