A 150,000 year old skeleton of a Neanderthal was not only found inside a cave...it was part of the cave! First found in the Lamalunga Cave in southern Italy in 1993, the remains were thought to be that of a present day person. It is suggested that the man fell into a well and got stuck and died. However, recent DNA testing on a piece of bone determined the remaining bones and skull to be that of a homo neanderthalensis.
Scientists say the homo neanderthalensis, known as "Altamura Man," has provided the oldest DNA sample ever found. Over the many years, his calcium bones blended with the stalactites and other stone deposits from dripping water coming down into the cave. This "caveman" will not be removed from the site because scientists fear removal will destroy what remains of Altamura Man.

Suggestions:
1. Pretend you were one of the spelunkers who found the remains. Write a diary of the day and how you felt.
2. Write 3 facts learned from the reading
3. Write a story pretending you are "Altamira Man." How did you wind up in the cave?
