It has come to our attention that there have been problems accessing some pages of Education World from AOL. The problems most reported are:
- Certain pages of Education World are reported as inaccessible from America Online.
- Printing certain pages from Education World result in errors or produce no results.
The majority of these problems are caused by AOL's proxy server. This proxy server is designed to speed the surfing experience for AOL users and decrease overall bandwidth requirements for the AOL service. When you request a page from Education World, AOL's proxy server intercepts that request and attempts to return the page you requested. The problem is that the language your web browser uses to talk to our server is not supported by AOL's proxy. HTTP 1.1 is the protocol that all new (since January 1997) internet servers use, but AOL has yet to upgrade their proxy software.
Most of the problems can be fixed by turning Compressed Graphics off under your Preferences - Web Graphics tab.
Most of the remaining problems are usually caused by incompatible or obsolete Web browser software. Education World is written to be compatible with basic HTML standards established years ago. Unfortunately, not all online services support such standardation or actively keep their member's software up-to-date.
This can easily be remedied by downloading and installing a newer and more compatible Web browser such as Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer. Education World works best with Netscape Navigator version 2.0 and higher or with Microsoft Internet Explorer version 3.0 and higher.
