App Review: 'Sushi Monster' Math App (iPad/iPhone)

App Name: Sushi Monster (iPhone/iPad)

Cost: Free

What does it promise? The Sushi Monster app promises a fun way for children to learn math especially fast math. They promise seven levels, five multiplication levels and 14 target numbers per round in terms of the game. It also promises a very engaging and interacting setup and a pace that will increase students’ speed and accuracy when it comes to solving simple math problems. The app is a part of Scholastic’s series of educational apps for students and is targeted towards ages 9-11, according to iTunes.

Does it deliver? Yes. The Sushi Monster app is a great way for students to learn how to complete simple math problems in a very timely fashion. A plus with this app is that children using it will be motivated to complete the problems because the app enables you to earn rewards such as points, stars trophies and the challenge to best your previous score. Even for an adult it can be a bit addicting which can be both a good and bad quality when it comes to gaming apps.

Can I use it in the classroom? It doesn’t look like this might have much use in a classroom. However, if you really wanted to expand the use of this app, it’s possible to have students compete in teams to reach the highest score during a math lesson. It’s fun and would incite teamwork, healthy competition and also give students great math practice. If you want to incorporate the app in the classroom you most certainly will have to get a bit creative but it’s not impossible.
