3 Awesome Upcoming STEM Development Programs

STEM learning has no shortage of professional development opportunities, especially with it becoming one of the most popular conversations in education. Below are three awesome, upcoming professional development opportunities put together by the Worcester Polytechnic Institute’s STEM Education Center.

LEGO Robotics for Educators has an entry-level program for educators looking to learn more about LEGO EV3 programming and various STEM topics.

According to WPI’s STEM Education center, “the LEGO Mindstorms EV3 component involves hands-on practice of using the different sensors to program a robot; the advanced program will focus on more challenging programming & tasks."

“The STEM education component includes a review of STEM standards, the engineering design process, and discussions of possible classroom scenarios related to robotics challenges.   Educators will be working in small teams alongside middle school students.”

This program runs from July 13-17 with a fee of $470.

Vex Robotics for Educators is another program offered by WPI, featuring an entry-level, yet intensive course. In this program, educators for grades 6-12 will learn how to effectively weave together STEM learning and robotics.

“The STEM education component includes a review of STEM standards related to robotics, application of the engineering design process, and discussions of possible classroom scenarios related to robotics and robotics challenges. Educators will be working in small teams alongside high school students (rising 9-10 graders),” according to WPI.

The less-intensive program runs from August 3-7 with a fee of $470 while the advanced program runs from July 20-31 at a $970 fee.

Engineering a Story is a great summer opportunity for educators in grades K-8 looking for a broader professional development program on engineering.

The program offers advice for young students who may be interested in or may not have been introduced to  aspects of engineering.

“This process engages students at any age, fosters critical reading and thinking skills, and stresses creativity and multiple solutions approach,” says WPI.

Engineering a Story does not require any additional curriculum. Instead, it builds on classroom texts already used by teachers and thus creates a true integration of subjects.”

The program will run on July 21 with a fee of $75 that may be discounted for groups.
