Americans volunteered their time and resources in record numbers following 9/11. Recapture that fervor by asking students to research a local need and find ways of meeting that need. Many local community and faith-based organizations have Web sites that can serve as starting points for such a project. Web sites for local television stations, newspapers, and magazines often cover local nonprofit organizations and their needs. The United Way and the Red Cross also can be excellent resources for community service projects.
