Lesson Objective: To learn about why animals migrate

Common Core Standard:  CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.K.1- With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details in a text.

Materials:

Starter:

Say:

  • Why do you think animals move from place to place?  (Allow the students to answer.)

Main:

Say:

  • Animals move from place to place or migrate for several different reasons.
  • Sometimes, animals need to migrate to find food or water.  Sometimes, animals migrate so that they can have their babies in certain places.  Sometimes, animals migrate because of the changing seasons or weather.
  • Many different types of animals migrate.  We already read about some of the different types of animals that migrate.
  • Birds, fish, whales, butterflies and many other animals migrate.
  • Some animals migrate really far, like the arctic tern we read about.  Other animals only go a short distance.
  • Scientists think that some animals migrate using the sun or stars to help them.  Some other animals use their sense of smell to know where to go, just like the salmon that we read about.
  • I am going to read to you about why animals migrate.  As I am reading, I want you to listen carefully so that we can answer questions after I am done.  (Read the information on the worksheet to the students.)
  • We are now going to answer questions about why animals migrate.
  • Does anyone have any questions?
