Materials:

Starter:

Say:

  • What do you know about snowflakes?  (Allow the students to answer.)

Main:

Say:

  • Snowflakes fall from the clouds when it is cold outside.  Snowflakes can be very big or very small.
  • Snowflakes all look different.  They all have the same number of sides, but every snowflake has a different pattern.  Raise your hand if you have ever looked closely at snowflakes as they were falling on your coat or glove.  What did you see?  (Allow the students to answer.)
  • Sometimes, snowflakes fall apart of stick together as they are falling from the clouds.  This may be why some snowflakes look different.
  • There are also snowflakes that form and look like cylinders and crystals.
  • Some snowflakes are very wet.  They stick together when they fall on the ground.  This is the type of snowflake that is great for making snowballs or snowmen.
  • Some snowflakes do not have as much water, which makes them light and float around more as they fall.  These snowflakes do not stick together very well, so it is much harder to make a snowball or snowman from this type of snow.
  • You are going to be reading about how snowflakes are made.  Then, you will be answering questions.  There is also a picture that shows some of the different snowflakes that can form.
  • Does anyone have any questions?

Feedback:

Say:

  • Who would like to share your answers?  (Allow the students to share)
