Lesson Plan: Snowflakes (Reading: Grade 1)

Lesson Objective: To listen to Snow Globe Family and then answer questions about the book

Common Core StandardCCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.1.1- Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.

Materials:

Starter:

Say:

  • What do you like to do when it snows?  If you have never seen or been in snow, what do you think you would like to do?  (Allow the students to answer.)

Main:

Say:

  • There are so many different things to do in the snow.  You can have a snowball fight, go sledding, build snowmen or even just go for a walk in the snowy woods. 
  • Look at the snow covering the trees and bushes is beautiful. 
  • Do you know what snow is?  (Allow the students to answer.)
  • Snow is tiny ice crystals.  Each snowflake is made of tiny ice crystals that are clumped together.
  • Raise your hand if you have ever held a snowflake on your glove or your jacket and looked at it carefully.  What do they look like?  (Allow the students to answer.)
  • Snowflakes all look different, but most have six sides.  They have all different designs and can be really amazing to see.
  • Some places in the United States get a lot of snow every winter and some places get no snow at all.  The places that get a lot of snow can have as much as 10 feet in one winter!  Would you like to have that much snow fall during the winter?
  • Today, you are going to be listening to a book called Snow Globe Family. 
  • This book is about what some people like to do in the snow.
  • After we listen to the book, I am going to give you a worksheet that has questions about Snow Globe Family. 
  • After you have finished doing the worksheet, we will talk about your answers.
  • Does anyone have any questions?
