Lesson Objective: To learn facts about stars

Materials:

Starter:

Say:

  • Do you know anything about stars?  (Allow the students to answer.)

Main:

Say:

  • There is so much to know about stars! 
  • We all know the rhyme “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.  Twinkle, twinkle, little star.  How I wonder what you are.  Up above the world so high.  Like a diamond in the sky.  Twinkle, twinkle, little star.  How I wonder what you are.”
  • Today, we are going to be learning more about what stars are.  Do you think that stars are diamonds?  (Allow the students to answer.)
  • Stars are not diamonds or even the shape of a diamond.  Sometimes when you look up at the sky, stars can look a little big like a diamond shape because of the way their light shines.
  • Stars are made of gas.  Raise your hand if you know what gas is.
  • The type of gas that stars are made of is not like the gas that your parents put in their vehicles. 
  • The type of gas that stars are made of is invisible, which means that we can’t see it.
  • There are different types of gas in the air that we breathe.  Some of the gases are oxygen, carbon dioxide and hydrogen.
  • Stars are made of different types of invisible gas that is burning.  Does anyone have any questions about that?  (Answer the students’ questions to the best of your ability.)
  • You are now going to be reading about stars.  I will read what paragraph to you now and then you can reread it and fill in the chart.  After you read, you will need to write down two things that stars can be, two things that stars have and two things that stars are.  (Read the paragraph about stars out loud and then have the students read and do the chart)
  • Does anyone have any questions?
