Lesson Plan: Harvest (Reading - Grade 1)

Lesson Objective: To listen to the book, Strega Nona’s Harvest, and then answer questions about the book

Common Core Standard:  CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.1.1- Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.

Materials:

Starter:

Say:

  • What is a harvest?  (Allow the students to answer.)

Main:

Say:

  • A harvest is the fruits and vegetables that are picked when they are ready.  This can also be called picking crops.
  • Fruits and vegetables are planted by farmers and are usually grown in the ground or on trees.
  • Raise your hand if you have ever picked fruits or vegetables and then eaten them.  What have you picked and eaten?  (Allow the students to answer.)
  • Many fruits and vegetables are picked or harvested in the fall.  When people think about fall, they often think about a harvest.
  • Thanksgiving is a fall feast that celebrates all of the foods that have been harvested for the year.
  • Today, you are going to be listening to a book called Strega Nona’s Harvest.  Raise your hand if you have ever heard the book, Strega Nona about the pot that makes pasta and won’t stop.
  • This book has Strega Nona in it, but it is a different book all about her harvest.
  • After we listen to the book, I am going to give you a worksheet that has questions about Strega Nona’s Harvest. 
  • After you have finished doing the worksheet, we will talk about your answers.
  • Does anyone have any questions?
