Lesson Plan: Plants (Reading - Grade 2)

Lesson Objective: To read the book, Redwoods, and answer questions about the book

Common Core StandardCCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.4- Describe how words and phrases (e.g., regular beats, alliteration, rhymes, repeated lines) supply rhythm and meaning in a story, poem, or song.

Materials:

Starter:

Say:

  • What are some different types of plants?  (Allow the students to answer.)

Main:

Say:

  • Today we are going to be talking about plants.  There are many different types of plants.  There are plants that grow fruits, vegetables and nuts.  There are plants that are grass and plants that are flowers.  Trees are also plants.
  • A plant is a living thing that has roots, a stem and leaves. 
  • What are some of the types of trees that you see or know about?  (Allow the students to answer.)
  • There are so many different types of trees!  Some trees live in places that are warm and wet, such as kapok trees and rubber trees.  Some trees live where it is colder, such as pine trees.
  • Trees that lose their leaves in the fall are called deciduous trees.  Oak, maple, ash and elm trees are some examples of deciduous trees.
  • Trees that have needles as leaves are called evergreen or conifer trees.  Some examples are pine trees and redwood trees.
  • You are now going to be listening to a book.  The title is Redwoods and it is by Jason Chin.  The book is all about redwood trees. 
  • Listen carefully while the book is because read because you are going to be answering questions about the book.
  • Does anyone have any questions?
