Lesson Plan: Hockey (Social Studies - Grade 2)

Grade: 2

Lesson Objective: To learn about the game of hockey and how it started

Common Core Standard: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.2.1- Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.

Materials:

Starter:

Say:

  • Do you ever wonder where things came from or how something started?  (Allow the students to answer.)

Main:

Say:

  • It is fun to think about where something came from or how it started.
  • Today, we are going to be learning about how ice hockey started.
  • Ice hockey is a game in which players skate around on ice.  They try to get a puck into a goal on one end of the ice.
  • Raise your hand if you have an idea of how it might have started.  (Allow the students to answer)
  • Ice hockey was not around until the 1800’s.
  • People took ideas from other games that they had seen or played and put them together to create ice hockey.
  • What games can you think of that might be like hockey?  (Allow the students to answer)
  • People have been taking ideas that they have seen or experienced and using them to create something new for hundreds of years.
  • If you could create a new sport, which sports would you take ideas from?  (Allow the students to answer.)
  • You are going to read about how hockey started.  You are then going to answer questions about what you have read.
  • Does anyone have any questions?
