  • Who has ever seen or played football?  (Allow the students to answer.)

Main:

Say:

  • Today we are going to be talking about the football.  There are some people who love football and watch it every Sunday.  Raise your hand if you or someone in your family loves to watch football.

  • Football is a game that is played by two teams of people using a football.  To score, the teams must either throw the ball to someone on their team or run while holding the ball to get to the end of the field called the end zone.

  • Players on the team without the ball try to tackle the person with the ball and make them fall down.  Raise your hand if you think that sounds like fun.  Raise your hand if you think that does not sound like fun.

  • People who play football spend a lot of time working on getting stronger and faster.  The people whose job it is to catch the football when it is thrown and run with it have to be very fast and strong enough to keep running while people are trying to pull them down.

  • We are going to be reading a poem called “Running Back.”  The running back is a position in football.  They are the players who get the ball and run down the field with it.

  • Sometimes poems that we read have words that rhyme.  Other times, poems do not have rhyming words and instead use descriptions so that the person reading the poem can imagine what is happening.

  • As you listen to the poem, think about the words in the poem, what they mean and what you are imagining.  (Read the poem)

  • I am going to give you a worksheet that has questions about the poem you just heard.  I will also give you a copy of the poem so that you can read it to yourself.

  • After you have finished doing the worksheet, we will talk about your answers.

  • Does anyone have any questions?

Feedback:

Say:

  • Who would like to share your answers?  (Allow the students to share.)
