Common Core StandardCCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.3.1- Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers.

Materials:

Starter:

Say:

  • Why do you think that different animals have all different types of homes?  (Allow the students to answer.)

Main:

Say:

  • Different animals have different needs.  Some animals, such as birds and bats, move by flying and so they need homes that they can fly in and out of easily.
  • Some animals travel all of the time and do not have one home that they go back to.  Animals such as elephants, gazelle, lions and others find safe places to sleep at night, but do not make their own homes.
  • Many smaller animals build homes to keep themselves safe.  Animals such as chipmunks, moles, mice and rabbits dig burrows underground for themselves.
  • There are natural homes, such as caves, piles of rocks and dead trees that animals can use as trees.  Animals that use homes such as these do not need to build homes, they just use what they can find.
  • Animals that live with or near people are usually given homes.  Farm animals live in barns or stables that were built for them.
  • Small pets, such as hamsters, guinea pigs and reptiles usually live in cages in people’s homes.
  • Other pets, such as dogs or cats have beds or crates that they use to sleep in, but their homes are in a house with people.
  • You are now going to read about some of the different types of animal homes.  You are then going to answer questions about what you have read.
  • Does anyone have any questions?
