Main:

Say:

  • Animals move around for different reasons.  Some of those reasons are to look for food, to find a place that is more comfortable or to look for a new home.
  • Migration is the movement of animals from one area to another due to the seasons.
  • Can you think of any animals that you know migrate?  (Allow the students to answer.  Make a list of the animals that they name on the board.)
  • Learning about migration can help us to understand about different animals and their needs.
  • It can also help us to contribute to the environment by either assisting the animals that migrate or by staying out of their way.
  • Many hummingbirds travel long distances when they are migrating.  If you are in the path of a hummingbird migration, you can leave food out for them to stop and drink.
  • There are also other birds that migrate that could benefit from bird food being left out for them.
  • It is also important to understand that many animals migrate to find a better place to live and it is best to leave them alone when they are doing that.
  • You are now going to read about migration.  You are then going to answer questions about what you have read.
  • Does anyone have any questions?
