Lesson Plan: Football - Social Studies

Lesson Objective: To learn about the history of football in America and answer questions about what has been learned

Common Core Standard: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.3.1- Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers.

Materials:

Starter:

Say:

  • Where do you think football came from?  (Allow the students to answer.)

Main:

Say:

  • Learning about where things, like different sports, come from can be really interesting. 
  • We don’t usually think about where things come from, we just enjoy them.  Learning about where something comes from, can help us understand that thing better.
  • What is something that you would like to learn more about so that you can better understand it?  (Allow the students to answer.)
  • Today, you are going to be learning more about football and where it came from.
  • All sports that people play were invented by someone.  Football is a sport that has only been in America for 150 years.
  • In America, the sport that we call football is really called gridiron football.  It is like rugby and soccer.
  • You are going to read about how football started to be played in America.  You are then going to answer questions about what you have read.
  • Does anyone have any questions?
