Subject: Language Arts
Grade: 5
Essential Question: What are some strategies that I can use to strengthen my understanding of poetry?
Standards:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.5.3 - Compare and contrast two or more characters, settings, or events in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text (e.g., how characters interact).
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.5.5 - Explain how a series of chapters, scenes, or stanzas fits together to provide the overall structure of a particular story, drama, or poem.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.5.9- Compare and contrast stories in the same genre (e.g., mysteries and adventure stories) on their approaches to similar themes and topics.
Materials:
Activating Strategy: Flyswatter vocabulary games. Teacher writes important vocabulary terms from previous lessons spread out across the board. Two students stand with their back to the board, teacher reads the definition, an example of the vocabulary terms aloud, teacher says go and the two students turn to board and try to be the first to swat the correct vocabulary term.
Teaching Strategy:
Summarizing Strategy: 3-2-1: Students create questions based on the poem they just read. Encourage students to use the important vocabulary terms within their questions, as well as encourage students to create different types of questions such as Right there questions, Think and Search questions, and Author and You questions (examples below)
