Essential Question: What are some strategies that I can use to strengthen my understanding of poetry?

Standards:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.5.3 - Compare and contrast two or more characters, settings, or events in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text (e.g., how characters interact).
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.5.5 - Explain how a series of chapters, scenes, or stanzas fits together to provide the overall structure of a particular story, drama, or poem.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.5.9- Compare and contrast stories in the same genre (e.g., mysteries and adventure stories) on their approaches to similar themes and topics.

Materials:

Printable Student Handout Worksheet

Activating Strategy: Wordo with poetry vocabulary: To play wordo students fill out their boards on the handout with the important vocabulary terms from the previous day, in any place they choose. Teacher reads off definitions and students cross off matching term.  When a student crosses off three in a row they yell "wordo" and read the vocabulary term and its meaning back to teacher to claim a prize

Teaching Strategy: With group members (or a partner), students read and analyze elements of the poem.

Come together as a whole group to discuss analysis of poem.

On back of handout have students create an illustration for their Cinquain.

Students create their own Cinquain poem.

Summarizing Strategy: Students share poem
