Main:

Say:

  • Trying to convince someone to do something is called persuading them.  When someone is trying to persuade you to do something and they write about it, it is called a persuasive essay.
  • What are some reasons that an author might want to persuade you to do something?  (Allow the students to answer.)
  • Authors write persuasive essay for a few different reasons.  A few of those reasons are to convince someone to think the way that they think or do something that they think is important.
  • When writing a persuasive essay, authors will include facts, statistics or quotes to help support their opinion.
  • The most important thing to do when reading a text is to try to figure out if the author is trying to convince you to do something and what he or she is trying to convince you to do.
  • Many times, an author will tell you why this topic is important to them and then they will share evidence that supports what they are saying.
  • When you are reading, you should figure out what the author is trying to convince you of and then look for the evidence that they share.
  • Now, you are going to read a persuasive text.  After you have finished reading, you will answer questions.
  • Does anyone have any questions?

Feedback:

Say:

  • Who would like to share their answers?  (Allow the students to share and go over the answers.)
