Say:

  • Why do you enjoy reading books that have illustrations?  (Allow the students to answer.)

Main:

Say:

  • Illustrations are pictures in books.  They can help us to know what is happening in a story or, they can tell their own story.
  • Reading books with illustrations can be a lot of fun.  It is fun to look at the pictures.
  • Reading books with illustrations can also help us to better understand the book and the story that is being told.
  • When looking at illustrations, you can see what is happening in the story.  In some books, you do not need to read the words because the illustrations tell the whole story.
  • In some books, illustrations tell part of the story that might be confusing or hard to understand.
  • Illustrations can help us to see characters who we may not be able to imagine.
  • Illustrations can also be used to tell a part of the story that is not being told with words.
  • Jan Brett, in her books, uses illustrations to tell a part of the story that she is not telling with words.
  • She has illustrations on the pages of her stories that are the main illustrations and then other illustrations on the sides of the page that tell another part of the story.  (Show the students a few pages from a Jan Brett book or read the whole book and point out the different illustrations).
  • Now, you are going to be reading a story and looking at the illustration that goes with it.  Then, you are going to answer questions.
  • Does anyone have any questions?
