Common Core StandardCCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.4.5- Describe the overall structure (e.g., chronology, comparison, cause/effect, problem/solution) of events, ideas, concepts, or information in a text or part of a text

Materials:

Starter:

Say:

  • Why do you think it is important to learn about events that happened in the order that they happened?  (Allow the students to answer.)

Main:

Say:

  • When we talk about, learn about or read about things that have happened, we usually talk about them in the order that they happened.
  • For example, when you talk about what you did during the day, you usually start by talking about breakfast and the things that happened in the morning.
  • It wouldn’t make a lot of sense to anyone listening to you if you started talking about dinner and then talked about breakfast and then talked about going to bed.  That would be very confusing.
  • When we are reading, many times different events are explained.  Sometimes those events are described using the date that they happened.  And, sometimes those events are described by ages of people.
  • Those events are usually in the order that they happened, but not always.  So, when you are reading, you can look for words that might help you figure out the order.
  • Some words used to describe when events happened are before, after, then, and next.
  • Knowing the order that events happened helps you to understand what happened in the past.
  • Now, you are going to be reading about Rosa Parks and some of the things that she did.  After you have read the paragraph, you are going to put the events that you read about in order.
  • Does anyone have any questions?

  • Who would like to share your answers?  (Allow the students to share and go over the answers.)
