Materials:

Starter:

Say:

  • When you are reading and something does not make sense, what do you do?  (Allow the students to answer.)

Main:

Say:

  • There are times when we are reading and what we are reading does not make sense.  The first thing that you should always do is to go back and re-read.
  • You always re-read because you could have missed a word, you might not understand what a word means or to help you understand what just happened.
  • We all make mistakes when we are reading and re-reading helps you to fix those mistakes.
  • Raise your hand if you have ever made a mistake when reading, and when you went back and read it again the mistake did not happen.
  • If you do not understand what you have read, or even just do not understand a word that you have read, sometimes the words around that word can help you.
  • For example, if you read the sentence, “So hysterical and shrill was Nigel's scream that everyone in the place,” you might not understand what the word shrill means the first time you read it.  But, if you go back and re-read, you can tell that the word shrill has something to do with the scream.
  • Now, you are going to be reading part of the book, Matilda, by Roald Dahl.  Read all of the sentences, going back and re-reading when there is something that you do not understand.
  • Then, you are going to answer the questions about what you read and about what you re-read and how it helped you.
  • Does anyone have any questions?

Feedback:

Say:

  • Who would like to share your answers?  (Allow the students to share and go over the answers.)
