Lesson Plan: Reading with Purpose

Subject:  ELA- Reading

Grade: 4

Lesson Objective: To read an article in order to learn more about the Statue of Liberty

Common Core Standard:  CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.4.4.A- Read grade-level text with purpose and understanding.

Materials:

Starter:

Say:

  • What are the different reasons that you read something?  (Allow the students to answer.)

Main:

Say:

  • Two of the reasons that we read are for fun and to learn something new.
  • When you are reading to learn something, you are reading for a reason and to understand something new.
  • Sometimes, you do not know what you are going to be reading about.  Where can you look that might give you a clue about what you will reading about?  (Allow the students to answer.)
  • You can look at the title because that might tell you what you will be reading about.  Once you know the topic you are reading about, you pay attention to sentences about that topic.
  • For example, if the title of a paragraph is “How Kangaroos Move,” you know that you will be reading about kangaroos.  Then, you know to pay close attention to the sentences that tell you about how kangaroos move.
  • Make sure that you are reading well enough to be able to answer questions after you finish the paragraph.  Sometimes, when you are reading to learn about something, it is a good idea to read the paragraph more than one time to make sure that you learned everything.
  • Now, you are going to be reading a paragraph.  Remember to look at the title so that you know what you are reading about.
  • After you have read the paragraph, you will answer the questions.
  • Does anyone have any questions?
