Five Minute Fillers: Custom Spelling Lists

Use this five minute filler activity in your classroom to give students a change of pace in between lessons.

Why:

Chances are your students love a good, competitive spelling match. When the Spelling Bee has came and went, use this site and its resources for quick ways to use down time and time in between lessons to give students quick but educational break from the material.

What:

KidSpell.com allows teachers to, for no charge, select or create spelling lists for the classroom and then allows students to use the lists in different provided games. The site has nearly 1,000 spelling lists ranging from grades 1-12 for you to chose from if you're short on time and categorizes its list based on the words it uses.

If you want to create your own list, the site provides an option where you can enter your own words and it will generate a list that students can then use.

How:

Decide whether you would like to use the lists the site has designed or create your own. Let your students work in groups or as individuals to then play the site's games that test students on their spelling knowledge; the games are already separated by grade level.

This activity requires access to a computer, laptop, or tablet. If you have limited access to devices, have students share the devices to play in group activity. If you support a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) initiative, chose that option.

Who:

This activity includes lists suitable for grades 1-12, but we recommend using for grades 1-8 to consider what ages will be most interested and be benefit most from spelling lessons.
