Summer Fun For Families

As summer approaches and children will be out of school, what are fun things we can encourage our families to do? Family time is vital, and summer is an important time to engage with each other, do fun things, and even take time to learn. Children are only young once, and you won’t be able to get this time back, so now is the time! Go do something fun this summer! Think about constructing a letter with a list of things that families can do in your town or surrounding towns. Think of things that are free, but that also may cost something. Give a lot of options. Add to this list.

Here are some ideas:

1. Visit museums/there are many free ones out there too.

2. Visit the Zoo.

3. Attend a family camp.

4. Plan a family walk every evening before it gets dark

5. Go on a picnic.

6. Go to the park.

7. Go to the library.

8. Go to the lake.

9. Go swimming.

10. Eat Ice cream. Try making it together. There are a lot of recipes out there!

11. Go camping

12. Take time star gaze.

13. Cook Dinner together.

14. Take pictures.

15. Jump rope.

16. Run/jog around the block.

17. Hula hoop

18. Make snow cones.

19. Take a trip.

 20. Roller skate

21. Go to an amusement park or carnival.

22. Go to a drive-in movie/if there isn’t one, a theater movie

23. Play in the sprinkler. (no matter your age, it is always fun!)

24. Write with sidewalk chalk.

25. Paint rocks and hide them for people to find.

26. Visit grandparents.

27. Visit neighbors.

28. Volunteer at a soup kitchen, the local hospital.

29. Visit and read to the elderly in an assisted living or nursing facility.

30. Create a lemonade stand.

31. Clean out the house and have a garage sale.

32. Paint canvases or furniture.

33. Check around the community for all camps and community things going on!

If you want to give families something to do besides the list, make a family take-home bag for each family. Differentiate for each of them, they their interests, backgrounds, and what they enjoy. There are many free ideas for families, but you could also have a group of teachers that has a fun night at the school throughout the summer. You could hold a carnival, movie night, come and paint and even a field trip for the day. What is one thing you want to try this summer?
