Earth Day is Sunday, April 22nd

Sunday,April 22, is Earth Day. Begun on April 22, 1970, by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson, the purpose of the day was to create awareness that our natural resources will not last forever and to stress each of our responsibility in protecting and preserving our Earth and its resources. On this day, bags of clean soil were passed out, people spilled oil on sidewalks in Washington, DC, to protest oil spills, high school students swept public spaces, and people wore gas masks to show that our air was being polluted. Within 10 years of the very first Earth Day, at least 28 laws were passed related to our environment!Today, over one billion people from at least 192 countries participate in Earth Day. How can you help? Here are some suggestions: Recycle, turn off lights when not in a room, unplug electronics when not being used, don't waste water(did you know you waste about 5 gallons of water leaving the tap run while you brush your teeth?), plant a tree seedling, organize a group to clean up the local park of litter, take a walk, learn some fact about the Earth and share those facts with someone on Earth Day.
