Superhero Day

I want to share an idea that worked really well for me.

A few weeks ago~ I had the students come to school dressed like a super hero of their own creation. I was dressed like a villian~ black cape~ black mask. I also used a voice scrambler to sound like Darth Vader.

The class then competed against mein a series of challenges that tested math~ vocabulary and science skills. Every time they got an answer right~ they got a point. The same went for me. While the students worked on a math problem~ I played Bonnie Tyler's "Holding Out for a Hero" in the background to add to the mood.

Prior to the event~ for homework~ the students had to create an academically-relatedhero~ including a name and costume. They also had to decide what their academic strengths and weaknesses were. For instance~ one student was named Lab Rat and excelled at science but had trouble spelling long words. I did this to get my gifted students thinking about their talents~ academically~ as well as their weak areas.

All said and done~ the class had a good time~ and we reviewed a lot of material. Also~ some students came up with some very creative--and funny-costumes and names. Also makes for some great pictures for an end-of-the-year slide show.
