TASK 4: MAKE TECHNOLOGY ACCESSIBLE TO ALL
Do any of your students have special needs?
- For bilingual students, check into software or Internet sites
that offer instruction in both languages. An easy tool to use
is BabelFish,
a free translation tool that translates very simple phrases from
English to a number of other languages. (Note: Be aware that Asian
languages and others might not show up accurately on your computer
depending on how your operating system was originally installed.)
- Both PCs and Macs have system software that will change the
key layout on keyboards, or the titles of icons, into several
languages for students with limited English proficiency. Be sure
to check out Accessibility
Resources for Special Students for tips and tools for use
in the regular classroom.
- Make sure classroom computers are fully accessible to students
who have physical disabilities. Take into account lighting, spacing,
and additional workspace for assistive technology.
- Many classroom computers are used for both remediation and enrichment.
Make available to students software or Web sites that can be used
with minimal supervision.
Next: Schedule online
time each day.
