A TECHTORIAL

QUESTION #5

I don't know nearly as much about computers as my child does. What do I need to know and how can I learn it?

One fear shared by parents and teachers is that children know more about computers than they do. The truth is, because their generation is growing up with computers, your children probably always will be more comfortable and confident with computers than you are. Rather than worrying about what you don't know, focus instead on building good communication with your child, so he or she can share knowledge and information with you.

You also can check with your child's school, local community colleges and universities, and community centers for short-term classes on the basics of computers. Perhaps you can barter with someone -- a tech-savvy parent or older student -- to teach you about computers in exchange for babysitting or offer some other service.

Next: Should I buy my child a computer?
