Lesson Plan

How tall were the U.S. presidents? Is the history of our presidents height a short story or a tall tale? Education Worlds U.S. Presidents (By Height) chart indicates that we have had a fair mix of presidents who stood more than and less than 6 feet tall.

For this lesson, provide students with a copy of the U.S. Presidents (By Height) chart. Talk about the chart, and then provide a copy of the U.S. Presidents: How Do They Measure Up? work sheet. Students will use the chart to help them answer the questions on the work sheet. If you teach younger students you might do this activity as a group activity, or students might work in pairs to answer the questions.

Extend the Lesson

  • Students might work together to create a graph as a visual representation of the heights of our presidents. The graph will help students see trends when it comes to our presidents heights. For example, have our presidents gotten taller over the years?
  • Have students figure the average, mean, and median height of their classmates. Do this together. Then let students work in pairs or on their own to figure the average, mean, and median heights of the presidents.
  • Students might create a bulletin board on which they arrange the presidents names (and perhaps even their presidential portraits -- source 1, source 2) from shortest to tallest.
