Elementary School Sample for Teaching Master Activity

DIRECTIONS:Ten elementary schools are listed below. You might substitute your own school's page on the NCES Classroom site (http://nces.ed.gov/nceskids/school/default.htm ) for one of the schools listed below. Note that all schools are not K-6, so some columns on the Teaching Master will be blank.

• Students should begin Teaching Master 2 or 3 by labeling the GRADE columns Grade K, Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5, and Grade 6.
• Not all schools contain all grades K-6, so students should use NA (not applicable) or an X to indicate a school that does not house that grade.
• All percentages in #3 are rounded to the nearest percent (and, therefore, might not add up exactly to 100%).

As a follow-up to this activity, you might create a handful of questions to post in a learning center or as a board activity. Students can use the data they have collected to answer questions such as

• How many schools on your chart have more than 500 students?
• Which school has the most teachers?
• How many of the schools don't have at least one class of kindergarten and first through sixth grades?
• Which school has the largest percentage of kindergarten students?
• Which school has the fewest students?
