A WORD ABOUT THIS ISSUE'S THEME:
.

Valentine Hearts

Pink and red hearts
Coming your way,
Say "I Love You"
On Valentine's Day.

Pink and red hearts
Sending to you
Sweet caring thoughts,
And a warm hug too!

Cut out several dozen paper heart shapes. Vary the sizes of the hearts. Invite children to
--- paste the hearts on paper to create animals
--- order the hearts from smallest to largest
--- sort the hearts by size
--- count sets of hearts and write the corresponding number.

ACTIVITY IDEAS

.

LET'S DANCE!
Introduce to children the colors of Valentine's Day. Gather red, pink, white, and purple streamers or scarves. Then have children play Musical Streamers (Scarves). Have children sit in a circle and choose four to six children to stand inside the circle. Play music and let the standing children dance around inside the circle. When the music stops, the standing children must switch places with someone in the circle.

PRINTING HEARTS
Give each child a piece of white construction paper and heart shapes cut from red tissue paper. Have children carefully brush white vinegar over their white papers. Next children should cover their white papers with red tissue-paper hearts. As the papers dry, the red hearts will fall off, leaving red heart prints.

LET EM' FLY!
Glue a red heart and a pink heart together, back to back. Cut out about three dozen hearts from white paper. Place all the hearts in the center of a bed sheet. Let children hold all edges of the sheet. When you call out "Flying Hearts," the children toss the sheet into the air to send the hearts flying. The child who finds the pink and red heart is the winner.

MAKE A KISS
Give each child a 12-inch square of aluminum foil and a strip of paper on which you have written "A Kiss for You!" Follow the directions on a rice cereal box to make the mixture for rice treats (cereal, margarine, marshmallows). Next, spray a funnel with vegetable cooking spray. When the rice cereal mixture is cool enough to handle, have children mold it into the funnel. Place the kiss on wax paper to cool. Then wrap it in the foil and tape the strip to the top. Let children give it to someone special.

I LOVE YOU MORE …
Read to children Jack Prelutsky's poem "I Love You More Than Applesauce." Talk about some of the things/people your students love the most and make a list of their responses on an easel pad. Review the list with children. Then give each child a large pre-cut paper heart shape. Let children copy the words "I love you" onto their hearts and then illustrate the people or things they love the most.
