Say:
- What are some spelling rules that you know? (Allow the students to answer.)
Main:
Say:
- You have learned many different rules to help you spell different words.
- Some spelling rules are words that end in -ch, words with a prefix or a suffix, words that have an “e” at the end and make the first vowel long.
- Some words have the same ending and just the beginning of the word is different. Some endings are -ank, -oy and -ir.
- There are many, many different spelling rules.
- There are some words that do not follow the spelling rules that you have learned.
- That means that these words are difficult to sound out when you see them. When you were younger, you may have learned these words as sight words or snap words.
- Just like sight words, words that do not follow a spelling rule are words that you just have to learn.
- Some examples are the words actually, especially, height and sure. (Write these words on the board and point to them as you say them.)
- Now, you are going to be doing a worksheet so that you can practice spelling words that do not follow rules. There is a list of words at the top of the page. Under that list, there is a paragraph that has underlined words.
- Those underlined words are not spelled correctly. You will write the correctly spelled word on the line next to the underlined word.
- Does anyone have any questions?
Feedback:
Say:
- Who would like to share their answers? (Allow the students to share and go over the answers.)
