- Who is your favorite character in a book and why? (Allow the students to answer.)
Main:
Say:
- All books that we read have different characters in them. We like certain characters and don’t like others because of their character traits.
- A character trait is a word that describes a character’s personality or things that make them who they are.
- Everyone has character traits- you, me and characters in books and movies. You can figure out character traits by paying attention to what a character says or does.
- For example, if there is a character that is always taking care of animals, what character traits do you think they would have? (Allow the students to answer.)
- Some of their character traits would probably be caring, kind, gentle and thoughtful.
- Another example is a character that is always frowning and telling other characters what to do. What character traits do you think this character would have? (Allow the students to answer.)
- This character’s traits might be mean, unfriendly and bossy.
- Sometimes a character’s traits are really easy to figure out and sometimes they are harder to figure out. Make sure to think about everything that a character does when figuring out their character traits.
- You are now going to read The Paperbag Princess. While you are reading, I want you to think about the characters and their traits.
- After you have finished reading, there are questions for you to answer. Write the answers to the questions that are below the story.
- Does anyone have any questions?
Feedback:
Say:
Who would like to share their answers? (Allow the students to share and go over the answers and where they came from.)
