What does it promise?: Hopscotch promises to teach younger users core fundamentals of coding and engineering, leading up to customized projects and loads of in-app gameplay time. Through unique controls and tailored logic, this app is a great first step on a path to coding. 

Does it deliver?: Hopscotch is an advanced programming tool for those lacking in advanced programming skills. This fun and educational app allows users to program animated characters through various interactive maneuvers and to learn core computer science concepts through fun educational games. Tap, drag, shake, tilt, and talk to control the app’s multiple functions. You never type. Much of the programmable interface uses labeled code blocks. 

Video tutorials guides users through this unique app to great benefit to the user’s engineering skills. Geared towards much younger, mostly inexperienced users, this is a phenomenal app for kids in elementary (maybe grade 2 or 3 depending on tech exposure) to early middle schools. Eventually, students will be making their own games, art projects, and other animations to share and play. 

Can I use it in the classroom?: Whether it’s playing with projects you make, or possibly just the guilty pleasure of enjoying the app and its large pool of user-made fun, hopscotch doesn’t have too many limits in it’s wide-reaching educational value for its age group. The bright color pallet and smooth design work make this app a treat to use, and even more appealing to youngsters.
