For many educators summer is a stalling period before the next school year. However, it could serve as a time for professional development or travel opportunities that can enrich educators' lives.

Educators may not always have time in their schedule to travel during the school year with grading assignments and tests. This makes summer the perfect time to take advantage of some great opportunities that are out there for educators.

1.National Education Association: “Travel Opportunities Just for Teachers”

The NEA outlines a few opportunities that teachers can take advantage of one of which happens to be a bed and breakfast style stay.

“Travelers benefit from the advice of their hosts on what to do and see at their destination,” according to the NEA.

“By being a host, you gain credits that can be applied to your future travel. You may also opt to allow members to housesit your home while you are not there on the “home-stay program.”

This allows you to choose whether or not you what to learn or help another educator learn from your personal experiences.

2. World Travel Opportunities

If traveling abroad is more your style, WorldTeach is a great place to find opportunities that allow you to continue your profession and learn about a new country at the same time.

Their chart shows both funded and unfunded opportunities allowing educators to teach students around the world in the areas they specialize in.

3. Short-Term Peace Corps Response

For educators who to continue their sense of accomplishment beyond teaching and make a difference in the world, the Peace Corps is providing short-term opportunities that could get you through the summer break.

4. Science and Life At Sea Exploration

Educators who want to explore more about the world of science and oceanic life, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration provides a “Teachers At Sea.”

“Teacher at Sea Program is to provide teachers hands-on, real-world research experience working at sea with world-renowned NOAA scientists,” according to The NOAA, “thereby giving them unique insight into oceanic and atmospheric research crucial to the nation.”

Hands on experience will allow educators to learn techniques and information that they can pass on to students. Students will become more aware of things that will be useful to them in the future.
