Ten Dr. Seuss Books for Read Across America Day

March 2 is Read Across America Day celebrating Dr. Seuss's birthday. On this day, thousands of schools, libraries and communities will encourage children and teens to sit down and read a book. 

In the spirit of Dr. Seuss's birthday, Education World has gathered a list of ten of Dr. Seuss's best children's books teachers can share with their younger students on Read Across America Day! (Also applicable to the students who are young at heart!)

  1. The Foot Book: Amazon says: " From left feet to right feet and wet feet to dry feet, there are so many feet to meet. The Foot Book will have young readers eager to step into the wonderful world of Dr. Seuss."
  2. There's a Wocket in My Pocket: In There's a Wocket in my Pocket, Amazon says: "In this silly Bright and Early Book classic by Dr. Seuss, a young boy goes exploring in his house and finds an array of fun characters! Are you certain there’s a Jertain in the curtain? Or have you ever had a feeling there’s a Geeling on the ceiling? From the pesky Nooth Grush on a tooth brush to a sleepy Zelf up on the shelf, There’s a Wocket in My Pocket will have young readers eager to explore their homes and the wonders of rhyming and wordplay."
  3. Green Eggs and Ham: In this book, Amazon says: "With unmistakable characters and signature rhymes, Dr. Seuss’s beloved favorite has cemented its place as a children’s classic. In this most famous of cumulative tales, the list of places to enjoy green eggs and ham, and friends to enjoy them with, gets longer and longer. Follow Sam-I-am as he insists that this unusual treat is indeed a delectable snack to be savored everywhere and in every way."  
  4. One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish: Amazon says: "Beginning with just five fish and continuing into flights of fancy, One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish celebrates how much fun imagination can be."
  5. The Cat in the Hat: In Seuss's beloved story The Cat in the Hat, Amazon says: "Poor Dick and Sally. It's cold and wet and they're stuck in the house with nothing to do . . . until a giant cat in a hat shows up, transforming the dull day into a madcap adventure and almost wrecking the place in the process!"
  6. Oh, the Places You'll Go!: In this book, Amazon says: "Dr. Seuss’s wonderfully wise graduation speech is the perfect send-off for children starting out in the world, be they nursery school, high school, or college grads! From soaring to high heights and seeing great sights to being left in a Lurch on a prickle-ly perch, Dr. Seuss addresses life’s ups and downs with his trademark humorous verse and illustrations, while encouraging readers to find the success that lies within." 
  7. And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street: Amazon says: "Dr. Seuss’s very first book for children! From a mere horse and wagon, young Marco concocts a colorful cast of characters, making Mulberry Street the most interesting location in town. Dr. Seuss’s signature rhythmic text, combined with his unmistakable illustrations, will appeal to fans of all ages, who will cheer when our hero proves that a little imagination can go a very long way." 
  8. Fox in Socks: In Fox in Sox, Amazon says: "Dr. Seuss's Fox in Socks has been troubling tongues—and garnering giggles—since 1965." 
  9. Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You?: Amazon says: "Kids will love this noise-filled Bright and Early Book classic from the one and only Dr. Seuss! Encouraging imaginative play while learning to read, Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You? will keep kids laughing [when they’re not tick-tocking]."
  10. Hop on Pop: In this book, Amazon says that this is the "simplest Seuss for youngest use." In Hop on Pop, readers can "see Red and Ned and Ted and Ed in a bed. And giggle as Pat sits on a hat and on a can and on a bat...but a cactus? Pat must NOT sit on that!"
