Apple Launches Plan to Increase School Technology Across Nation

Apple has recently announced its plans to join the Obama Administration to make sure more students in the United States have access to the technology they deserve.

In order to do so, Apple chose 114 schools in 29 states to receive grants from the Obama Administration's ConnectED effort, according to an article on TheHill.com. The program "seeks to connect 99 percent of the country's students to high-speed broadband Internet."

“We believe that the young minds and young innovators of tomorrow should have every opportunity to realize their potential through today’s powerful learning tools,” Apple said in announcing its plans, the article said.

In those 114 schools, the article said, "96 percent of students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, a common metric of poverty" and "ninety-two percent of students in the schools are of a racial or ethnic minority."

“Education is a fundamental human right for everyone," said Apple's official ConnectED site. "And yet, there is great disparity in our schools and education systems. In fact, many schools struggle to provide the basics despite the dedicated efforts of teachers and families. A lack of equal access to technology and knowledge puts entire communities and populations of students at a disadvantage, especially minorities. At Apple, we see the results of this and other forms of inequality every day. Minorities are significantly underrepresented in the technology industry. We want to do our part to change this."

Every student at these schools, the article said, "will get an iPad, every teacher and administration will get an iPad and a Mac computer, and every classroom will also get an Apple TV." Apple is "also assigning an educational team to support each chosen school to help integrate technology into lessons."

"We believe that the young minds and young innovators of tomorrow should have every opportunity to realize their potential through today’s powerful learning tools," said Apple's official website. "It’s important to us that our contribution to ConnectED makes a difference for students and communities who need it the most."
