Arkansas High School Starts Drone Program

At a school district in Beebe, Arkansas, drones will be making their way into classrooms. After Principal Mike Tarkington watched a segment about drones on "60 Minutes," he was inspired. Now students will be able to take a drones class.

"These were not military drones, but different types of drones," Tarkington told seattlepi.com. "I thought it was one of the most interesting segements I've seen on television in a while."

Tarkington said when he approached the school administration, there was no "resistance whatsoever." The district got permission from its administration, started planning and received a grant from NASA and the Arkansas Space Grant Consortium.

Types of drones include butterfly, hummingbird and fly. The U.S. Postal Service has considered drones for mail delivery, and Amazon wants to start a program using drones for book delivery. Even Domino's Pizza has discussed using drones for pizza delivery.

"The applications for the use of drones are growing daily," said Tarkington. "I do believe it will excite some of our students about learning, as well as prepare them for possible careers."
