Space shuttles lifting off and landing on run-ways~space probes to distant worlds~ and an international space station~ all had their beginning with brave astronauts such as John Glenn. Fifty years ago this February~in a 9 1/2 by 6 ft. space capsule called Friendship 7~ John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth. In a space about the size of a Volkswagen Beetle~Glenn orbited the earth~ three times~ in 4 hours and 56 minutes. I developed a webquest on John Glenn's amazing accomplishment along with other historic space firsts which I thought you might find of value to use with your students. You can make a copy to use with your students: http://www.gailhennessey.com/index.shtml?JohnGlenn.html. Email me if you'd like the key.
Post activity/discussion:
1. What are several characteristics of someone who is an astronaut?
2. What would you like to see~ if you could go into space?
3. Pretend you are John Glenn and write a diary entry telling how you felt in Friendship 7~ what you saw and what you might have planned to say when you exited the capsule.
Happy New Year to all...
